What can you tell us about your design on the edding Art Series markers?
The pattern on the marker shows lots of different stylized heads, joined together in a line. We often work with large patterns and repeats which can keep on being repeated. This allows us to fill areas quickly and in an individual style.
Which (artists/designers/illustrators etc) have been (or are) your greatest influences (dead or alive)?
I certainly like stuff by Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat. But actually, I am less inspired by specific artists, designers and illustrators. I like to surf the Internet and see what?s going on out there. In so doing, my sources are communities such as Myspace.
Are you a member of any crews/collaborations/groups? Can you tell us about them?
KLUB7 is collective grouping of six designers and artists from Berlin and Halle / Saale. We have been going for more than 10 years now. In terms of the collective?s creative works, KLUB7 moves between illustration, comics, street art, writing, graphic design and typography. KLUB7?s style comes from mixing and matching these different disciplines. The resultant work is by no means vague. New ?creative delicacies? are produced - always within the context of the urban and the sub-cultural.
Our customers include BMW, Google, New Yorker Europe, edding, Becks and the Centre for Contemporary Culture.
In 2006, we published a book on Street Art entitled "Street Art - the city as a playground?.
To date, KLUB7 has put on more than 30 exhibitions of its creative work in Germany, France, Norway, Holland and Switzerland.
What is your proudest/greatest achievement to date?
Let me think?.
We have done so much in recent years.
Certainly, the edding marker was a highlight. Other favourite projects of mine include the large, lavish murals. What?s more, the many exhibitions - complete with the trips made with the entire team KLUB7 - were also things which have given me great satisfaction.
Describe your trademark style/character? (or what are you most famous for?)
My favourite area of work is illustration. When it comes to tasty, sweet representations, such as pictures of cakes or biscuits, you can barely stop me. I find I can only remove the pen from my hand once the cartridge is empty and the ink is all gone.
If you could collaborate with one artist/group who would that be and why?
This is a very interesting question. Really! But to answer this, I do not have enough space on this sheet of paper. I do not want to offend anyone by forgetting to mention them by name.
What's your favourite colour?
The colours I use change, depending on the phase I am in. But for the most part I do not use many colours for my paintings. Usually, I only use black and white, along with 3 or 4 other colours. I can also find pleasure in creating really colourful things, but my work always demands an element of restraint in my choice of colours.
Where and when did you start?
During my A-level studies, I was lucky enough to pass an advanced course in art. This aroused my interest in art and everything associated with it. After my A-levels, I started an apprenticeship. I then went on to study design. I financed my studies by drawing murals and selling pictures. In 1998, I began to paint graffiti in Halle / Saale in Germany. Actually, I can say that, for as long as I can recall, I have always been involved with ways and forms of visual expression. It is what I have always wanted to do.
How did you come to get your name?
I came up with the name a while back. DANI DAPHNE * is a combination of my official forenames plus the name of a film character who first amused me years ago - and has often done so ever since!
Where is the best place that you have worked and why?
I don?t always manage to separate work and leisure. I work wherever I go, wherever I am.
Who are your usual artistic partners?
KID CASH, OTTO BAUM, DISKO ROBOT, MIKE OKAY, LOWSKII and 44FLAVOURS.
What other brands/companies have you worked for?
KLUB7 customers include BMW, Google, New Yorker, Edding, Becks and the Centre for Contemporary Culture.
What can we expect to see from you in the future?
I enjoy my work, so I'll do what I do: paint, draw, paint and draw.
